Best Dog Clippers For Cocker Spaniel (Reviewed In 2022)

Best Dog Clippers For Cocker Spaniel

Cockers are right up there as probably one of the best breeds to have around you as a loyal friend. Friendly, endearing, curious, and beautiful- these majestic little pooches sometimes seem to have a slight sense of humor. However, this overly interested nature comes at the price of tangled, matted fur. Therefore, Cocker Spaniel grooming is one of the most important parts of owning and maintaining this family-friendly breed.

While trimming a cocker spaniel might seem like a tough ask due to all the fur covering their wiggly bodies, you can get right into it with a few handy “how-to” tutorials and the right Cocker Spaniel grooming tools. While a professional groomer is always the better option, budget and regular visits become impractical. So, the way to go about it is to space out your holidays and shave your Cocker Spaniel in-between visits. Or, if you want to go at it solo, some practice should have you on top in no time.

Regardless of your grooming budget or if your breed is American or English, learning how to groom your Cocker Spaniel should be your priority when you first get your pet. Now, different body parts, fur lengths, and fur types require different sizes of blades, and it might get hard to remember. So, we’ve compiled a small tutorial on grooming your Cocker Spaniel along with the best clipper-blade combos below.

But choosing the right clipper/ trimmer might get hectic due to the absurd amount of irrelevant information available on the internet about each product. Well, lay back and keep on reading because we’ve compiled a list of the best dog clippers for your Cocker. And to save you some time, we’ve only included relevant information and only included products that have been hand-tested by our experts.

I Just Got A Cocker Spaniel, Do I Really Need A Hair Clipper?

Now, when you first get a young Cocker, the fur might seem manageable with a pair of scissors. However, you’ll realize that this furry little pooch is a handful while they grow up. With a short and fine coat on the head and medium undercoated fur on their body, it’s almost impossible to use the same blade for the entire body.

The texture of the fur is what makes a Cocker. And for those with experience, you’ll know how matted the fur can become if not cleaned and groomed regularly. And thus, for insurance about your dog’s health and beauty, clipping their hair is necessary. Now, you could have it done by a professional, but most of us don’t have that kind of budget. So, get the best Cocker Spaniel grooming tools for the time between two visits.

But There Are So Many Types! Which One Should I Go For?

Like any other product with thousands of good options, there’s no ‘perfect’ clipper type that works for everyone. Honestly, your choice of clippers or clipper types should depend on several things. How much is your budget? How much effort do you want to put in when trimming your Cocker Spaniel? What type of clipper is your dog more comfortable with? Do you know how to groom a Cocker Spaniel?

While these questions might seem like a lot to digest, it’s important not to get intimidated or get too carried away. So let’s get to know a bit more about Cocker Spaniel clippers first. There are many ways you could classify your Cocker clippers, from speed to power input to blade input. But the fundamental differences between major market contenders are given below:

Single Speed Vs. Variable Speed

The choice between single-speed or multispeed depends more on your experience level than everything else. A single-speed clipper provides you with a safe and okay shave for your Cocker Spaniel. They also tend to heat up a lot less than variable speed clippers. However, advanced users love the versatility that comes with a multispeed clipper. You could give your Cocker a dog show finish with the right amount of practice!

So, rule of thumb- start with a single-speed clipper but move on to a variable speed one once you’re comfortable.

Corded Vs. Cordless

Now this one is self-explanatory. Cordless clippers are usually run with a lithium-ion battery, while corded clippers use a wire hanging from their end to get their Power. And the benefits of a cordless clipper are also somewhat intuitive. They’re great if you want to avoid the hassle of having wire tanglings around your garage or if you’re traveling. They’re also lighter and can move more freely- allowing for better, more accurate, and precise cuts. They’re also better for shaving the more sensitive places like your pup’s paws, faces, and eyes.

However, rechargeable clippers are notoriously less stable when it comes to Power. They seldom have the battery to last more than 40 minutes to an hour of continuous shaving. This means you’ll be lucky to get a full-body shave out of only one full battery of charge. The batteries corded clippers are outfitted and wear out pretty quickly, too, meaning repairing and replacing these clippers are also more expensive.

The Trimmer Conundrum

Now trimmers might seem like the perfect shaving option. Quiet, convenient, and aesthetically pretty- you might be tempted to replace your clipper with a trimmer. However, clippers are never powerful enough to shear your Cocker Spaniel’s entire body. On the other hand, they’re pretty good for touching sensitive areas- eyes, ears, face, and paws. But getting one as your primary machine would be a risk only worth taking if your dog is super nervous.

Our Top 9 Cocker Spaniel Clippers

If you look for it, you’ll probably find tens if not hundreds of clippers that sound like they’d be great for your Cocker. However, most products never back up flashy descriptions with great make or usability. So, we’ve reviewed every clipper we could get our hands on and compiled a list of the best products among them. Keep reading to learn more about the very best- from pros and cons to manufacturing reviews.

How To Figure Out The Best Clipper-Blade Combo?

How To Figure Out The Best Clipper-Blade Combo

While clipper choice is essential, the blade choice makes or breaks the combination. If you’re a beginner, it might be difficult to figure out the perfect blade size. However, most manufacturers will give you a blade chart in the packaging or website with individual grooming guides. Please remember that manufacturer verified information is always going to be more accurate.

But for a quick reference, we’ll be adding a graph where blades specified for each part of your Cocker Spaniel’s body have been recommended. Note that this was prescribed by Andis and is only fully accurate to Andis’s blades:

For American Cocker Spaniels,

  • Head– 7, 7FC to 5, 5FC
  • Body, Side, Tail – 7, 7FC to 5, 5FC
  • Face, Ears, Throat- 10 to 15

For English Cocker Spaniels,

  • Head – 7FC
  • Body, Side, Back – 7, 7FC to 5, 5FC
  • Front of Forelegs – 5, 5FC to 4, 4FC
  • Ears, Face, Cheeks – 10 to 15

Once again, please remember that this blade chart is only accurate to Andis’ blade. For other brands, check out their websites.

How To Groom A Cocker Spaniel- The Basics

How To Groom A Cocker Spaniel- The Basics

Thousands of articles and videos on the internet are dedicated to teaching you how to get the perfect Cocker Spaniel show cut. A simple “how-to” search on google should get you right on track. But we promised you the basics- so here are the basic steps:

  • Decide on how you want to shave your Cocker Spaniel. There are thousands of styles you could go for. Just pick one from google
  • Comb and brush your pup’s fur. Some clippers will have combs custom-made for this purpose in the packaging. If you don’t have one, just use your pin brush. Remember to detangle every knot you come through to avoid a big mess.
  • Give your Cocker a bath. This step is just to make sure you’re not cutting into dirt or lesions. Always use warm water for bathing and blowing dry afterward
  • Start with the face, head, and neck. Attach a 10 or 15 blade to your clipper and start with the eyelids. Then gradually go down along the nose while holding the skin tightly to avoid cutting into folds. Be careful around the eyes and the ears. ALWAYS SHAVE IN THE DIRECTION OF HAIR GROWTH.
  • Shave the back, belly, and tail. Now for this part, a 7 blade should do fine. Start from your dog’s back and shave to the tip of its tail.
  • Trim your pup’s paws. Now, it’s suggested not to use clippers for shaving your pup’s paws as Cocker Spaniels are very sensitive around this area. Instead, take their paw into your lap and trim carefully in a circular motion using scissors.
  • Clean ear and eye dirt, clip nails. Now, this part is entirely optional. However, if you want your pup to be scooting and good-looking for a show, this is the way!

FAQs

Why does my clipping blade get hot?

Clippers are usually hooked up to motors that rotate at very high speeds. This speed is either measured in RPM (Rotations Per Minute) or SPM (Strokes Per Minute). At high rates, the friction inside the motor casing often causes heating issues and should be fine if you get a 2-minute break. However, if heating issues are severe and you feel like your dog might get uncomfortable, change clippers.

My Cocker’s fur is matted. What blade do I use?

Now matted fur means that your Cocker’s hair is very close to their skin, and you might hurt them if you rush the job or use a 7 blade. So instead, follow the direction of hair growth and shave along their natural curves using a 10 knife.

Can’t I just use a regular hair trimmer?

While they serve similar purposes on the surface, dog trimmers are engineered very differently from human trimmers. Dog trimmers usually stay quiet, relaxed, and low on vibrations. They’re also a lot less rough in usage. Humans shave for 5 to 10 minutes max, so Power usually gets preference over comfort. Use a human trimmer on your dog a couple of times, and you’re sure to see burns, blisters, and a terrified dog.

A Final Thought

Dogs are loveable creatures and trust us with all of their hearts. However, when trying to shave your Cocker Spaniel, please stop and reassess the situation if you notice that your dog is facing discomfort. Consulting a professional groomer is never the wrong time if you’re struggling.

But once you get the hang of it, Cocker Spaniel grooming is one of the best ways to increase the bond between you and your pet. So feel free to check out the best dog clippers for Cocker Spaniels that we’ve reviewed in this article and look into more pieces about how to groom your Cocker.

Until next time, I wish you a happy and beautiful pet!
